The vast majority of our country is rural. The tourism for our rural communities is diminishing which is adversely affecting many people’s lives and livelihoods. Tony Marshall and Liz Piraner started The Weekend Locals as a way of helping these struggling regional towns and the people who live in them. The goal of The Weekend Locals is to boost the local economy and tourism in small regional towns by taking a group of supporters to these towns. They spend money in the local businesses, enjoy the activities on offer, interacting with the locals while also spreading the word for others to do the same. All donations from their sponsors go directly into the township. This is the most rewarding part for both the locals and the Weekenders on their trip. They get to have a laugh, share stories and sometimes even be that caring ear to listen to their worries. The smiles on everyone’s faces and reviews they receive really says it all.
